Kiss, Marry, Kill

The Great Gatsby: characters and characterization | SkyMinds.Net

The Great Gatsby included many complex and interesting male characters. Each with their own personality. In this break down I will be discussing Gatsby, Wilson, and Tom. Considering their character traits and development throughout the novel, my answer would be to marry Gatsby, kiss Wilson, and kill Tom.

Marrying Gatsby would be filled with lavish parties, nice gifts, and other kind gestures. Gatsby also has a good personality. He is hard working whether it comes to his relationships, wealth, status, or work. He has good values and dedication. We see his dedication through relationships, in many ways. One particular relationship is his one with Daisy. Gatsby, “... bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay.” We often see him even reaching out to the green light just upon her dock. Even though the two only shared a brief bond during the war, Gatsby never gave up and continued to fight for her. Considering this loyalty he would be a great husband.

Not only is he loyal but he is also a good man. After the death of Myrtle Wilson, he took the blame even though he was not the one to commit the crime. Gatsby said, “...but of course I'll say I was driving,” after coming clean to Nick about the true events that occurred. Daisy was the one who hit Myrtle and Gatsby was quick to take the blame. Not only did he protect her then, but he also protected her when he waited for her after talking to Tom. He made sure that no harm came to her. Jay Gatsby is one of the best characters in the novel and out of the three men, he would be the one I would choose to marry.

Kissing Wilson would be my next choice. Wilson is a hardworking and dedicated man. He works hard in his garage and does his best to run his business in The Valley of Ashes. His love for his wife Myrtle was vivid and he was very loyal. When he found out she died he was absolutely devastated. Wilson, “... rocked himself back and forth on the couch inside,”  and was said to be whispering to himself. The loss of the one he loved broke him. Wilson was left with nothing so he became determined to find out who the driver of the yellow car was. He processed to kill Gatsby, thinking that was the true driver. Even though he was wrong it shows how strong his love was for his wife and how he was willing to do anything for her. Even though Wilson was shown to be a hardworking and loyal man, I still dislike the fact that he chose to kill Gatsby. Gatsby did not deserve to lose his life. That is why I have chosen to only kiss Wilson.

Killing Tom would be my final answer. Tom is powerfully built with loads of money, but extremely arrogant, rude and his attitude is horrible. He only cares about his social view and has no respect for people that he believes may be below him. Right off the bat, we see that Tom is disloyal and cheating on his wife Daisy. When Jordan said, “...Tom’s got some woman in New York,” it was revealed and later on we discovered that the woman was Myrtle Wilson. This just goes to show the respect he has for his wife and women in general. He is also abusive. We see his aggression when he slaps Myrtle across the face for mentioning Daisy, and how Daisy was going to flicker the light if Tom, “...tries any brutality…” against her.

Not only does Tom not respect women, is disloyal, and abusive but he is also racist. During the first dinner that was held, Tom said, “Well, it's a fine book, and everybody ought to read it.” He said that about a book that described that the dominant white race is in danger of minorities overwhelming them. Considering my clear hatred for Tom, I would choose to kill him out of the three men.

The Great Gatsby included many interesting and compelling female characters. Each with their own personality. In this break down I will be discussing Daisy, Jordan, and Myrtle. Considering their character traits and development throughout the novel, my answer would be to marry Daisy, kiss Myrtle, and kill Jordan.

A marriage to Daisy would be filled with fancy outfits, a big mansion, and everything classy in life. Daisy is kind, loyal, and strong. She was strong when she stayed by Tom’s side after finding out about his affair and she was strong enough to marry that man and bear his child in the first place. My favorite quote from Daisy is, “I hope she'll be a fool—that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” This quote says a lot about Daisy and the viewpoints she has. It shows her self-awareness and the sexism that she experiences.

Marrying Daisy would be my first choice because of the way she carries herself with grace and beauty. She has been described to have an aura of charm and sophistication. White daisies symbolize innocence, motherhood, hope, new beginnings, and purity. We often see her dressed in light colors, mostly white. In my opinion, Daisy is kind, brave, strong, and she continues to go on without giving up. That is why my final choice would be to marry Daisy.

Kissing Myrtle would be my next choice. Myrtle has been described to be a social climber and chaser of her wants and desires. When her husband Wilson was not enough for her, she started to have an affair with Tom. Myrtle married him because she thought he was a, “...gentlemen…and I thought he knew something about breeding,”  Even though cheating is not morally correct, I feel a sense of pity for her. All Myrtle wanted was to be someone other than herself. She wanted wealth, power, and high rank. She was consistently chasing a version of herself that didn't exist.

Her death also played a role in my decision. Myrtle’s last words before she died were, “ Throw me down and beat me, you dirty little coward!" It just goes to show how mistreated his women was. Those were the words she said to her own husband. She was consistently being mistreated by men and others. We see in chapter two how Tom hits her because she spoke of Daisy’s name. Myrtle was a survivor of domestic violence and so much more, that is why I have chosen to kiss Myrtle.

Killing Jordan would be my final choice. Jordan is a famous golfer who has been described to be dishonest, privileged, and careless. Jordan is a reasonable woman, the quote, “...Jordan beside me, who, unlike Daisy, was too wise ever to carry well-forgotten dreams from age to age,”  shows the difference between the two women and how Jordan is more of a practical woman and how she lives in the present day, not spending any of her time daydreamings. Often Jordan would look, “...completely motionless and with her chin raised a little…” She is not a very interesting person and in my opinion, she seems bland.

Jordan is also a cheater and dishonest. It was found that during one of her golf torments she had cheated, “... she had moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi-final round.” Because of her privilege and rank, she believes that she is just allowed to cheat and that no rules apply to her. Something like this says a lot about one’s character negatively. Considering Jordan has a very bland personality and often uses her rank in society to cheat, my final choice would be to kill her.
